About The Manor at Ngorongoro

The Manor at Ngorongoro is a white-gabled, Cape Dutch-style house standing on a coffee estate in the highlands near Karatu. It looks more like a country house than a safari lodge, with manicured gardens and a front lawn that, in the photographs, has children running across it.

Inside, the character continues. There is a lounge with a fireplace, a grand piano and a bar, and suites with lit fires, sitting areas and four-poster beds. After days of dust and early starts, the contrast is a pleasure, and the cooler highland evenings make the fires feel entirely natural.

The estate is close to the crater rim, so it works well as a base for a descent into Ngorongoro, while the pool, spa and valley views encourage a slower pace. Its kitchen has a strong reputation, which makes the evening meal an event in its own right.

  • Cape Dutch-style manor house with gabled front and gardens
  • Suites with fireplaces, sitting areas and four-poster beds
  • Lounge with grand piano, fireplace and bar
  • Coffee estate setting with views across the valley
  • Swimming pool and spa for slower days
  • Restaurant with a good reputation among guests

Setting

The manor stands on a coffee estate in the highlands around Karatu, within reach of the crater rim. The altitude means cooler air and greener surroundings than the plains below, and the gardens are shaped and tended in an almost English way. Valley views stretch beyond the grounds, and the setting feels calm and settled, a welcome pause between park days.

Rooms and tents

Rooms are en suite and arranged as suites in the manor style. The photographs show a lit fireplace, a separate sitting area and a four-poster bed, a combination that feels warm and traditional rather than safari-rustic. Ask us about the room types available, and whether families can be placed together, as the lawns and gardens clearly welcome younger guests.

Dining

The restaurant is one of the reasons guests choose the manor, with a kitchen that has built a strong reputation. Expect a more composed, plated style of dining than at a bush camp, and enjoy drinks in the lounge by the fire or the piano beforehand. Please tell us about dietary requirements before arrival so the kitchen can plan for you.

Things to do from here

  • Descent into Ngorongoro Crater for a full-day game drive
  • Walks through the estate gardens and coffee grounds
  • Swimming and relaxing by the pool
  • Spa treatments after a crater day
  • Visit to Olduvai Gorge, arranged with Lemala

When to stay

Ngorongoro is usually rewarding in January to March and again from June to October. The dry months bring clearer roads and good viewing on the crater floor, while the early-year months are green and productive. Long rains usually fall from March to May and the short rains in November and December, when the highlands turn lush and misty and the manor's fires earn their place.

Good to know

  • The manor is in the highlands near Karatu, so evenings can be cool. Pack a warm layer.
  • The crater descent is a separate full-day outing, with transfers and timing arranged by Lemala.
  • Ask us to confirm child policies and family suite options if you are travelling with younger guests.
  • Wi-Fi and power are not specified, so ask us to confirm before you rely on staying connected.
