Section 01

What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to keep.

A cookie is a small piece of text that a website asks your browser to store on your device. Each time you return to the site, your browser can send that text back, which lets the site recognise that you have been there before. Cookies are very common and, on their own, they cannot run programs or read other files on your device.

Cookies differ in who sets them and how long they last. A first-party cookie is set by the website you are visiting, which here is lemalasafaris.com. A third-party cookie is set by another company whose service the site uses. A session cookie disappears when you close your browser, while a persistent cookie stays until a set date or until you delete it.

Some cookies are needed for a website to work at all, and some are optional, such as those that help a site understand how it is used. We treat these two groups differently, and this policy keeps them apart so you can see what each one does.

Section 02

Similar technologies: session and local storage

Browsers also offer storage that is not a cookie but does a similar job.

Besides cookies, your browser lets a website keep small pieces of information in two places called session storage and local storage. Session storage holds information for as long as a single browser tab stays open, and it is cleared when that tab or window is closed. Local storage holds information on your device until you clear it, even after you close the browser.

Unlike cookies, this information is not sent to our servers every time your browser loads a page. It stays in your browser and is read by the site's own code on your device. We still describe it here because it serves a similar purpose, and because you should know about everything the site keeps on your device.

When this policy says cookies, it usually means both cookies and browser storage. Where the difference matters, we name them separately, and the section on browser storage lists every key we use.

Section 03

How we use them in plain terms

We use a few small tools to run the site, protect forms and, if you agree, understand visits.

We use cookies and browser storage for a small number of ordinary reasons. One cookie remembers your cookie choice so that the banner does not ask you again on every page. Browser storage keeps an unfinished enquiry safe if you close the form by accident, and it remembers where a visit began so that an enquiry can be linked to the page that inspired it.

Our spam protection on forms may use limited storage from Cloudflare to run its check. If, and only if, you accept analytics, Google Analytics 4 sets two cookies that help us see which pages are useful and where visitors leave. Staff who sign in to our admin area receive one further cookie, which visitors never receive.

We do not use any of these tools to build a profile of you for advertising. Each item is listed by name below, with its purpose, who sets it and how long it normally lasts.

Section 04

The short version

Essential items always, analytics only if you say yes, and no advertising at all.

Essential items are always on, because the site cannot remember your choice or protect its forms without them. Analytics are off until you accept them in the cookie banner. Advertising cookies are never used, whatever you choose.

If you accept analytics, we load Google Analytics 4 and it may set its cookies. If you decline, Google Analytics runs in a restricted mode: it sets no cookies and stores no identifier on your device. If you accept and later change your mind, you can withdraw consent and the analytics cookies are removed.

You can browse the whole website, read every page and send an enquiry without accepting analytics. Declining does not reduce what you can do on the site.

  • Always on: the cookie that remembers your choice, and browser storage that supports the enquiry form.
  • Only with your consent: Google Analytics 4 and its cookies.
  • Never used: advertising cookies, social media pixels, cross-site tracking.
  • Always yours to change: the Cookie settings link in the footer.

Section 05

Strictly necessary cookies: lemala_consent

One first-party cookie remembers your cookie choice.

The lemala_consent cookie is set by lemalasafaris.com when you make a choice in the cookie banner. It stores two things: whether you said yes or no to analytics, and the date you made that choice. It does not store your name, your email address or anything that identifies you personally, and it is not shared with any other company.

It lasts for about six months. After that time the banner appears again so that you can confirm or change your choice. Without this cookie, the site would have to ask you the same question on every page you open, which would be tiresome and would make the banner unusable.

Because this cookie is strictly necessary for the banner to do its job, and exists only to carry out your own request about cookies, it does not need your consent. This is why it is set even if you decline analytics. If you delete it, the only effect is that the banner shows again.

  • Name: lemala_consent.
  • Purpose: remembers your analytics choice (yes or no) and the date you made it.
  • Set by: Lemala Safaris, so first party.
  • Typical lifetime: about six months.

Section 07

Analytics cookies: Google Analytics 4

Optional cookies that help us understand how the site is used, set only if you accept.

We use Google Analytics 4 to learn which pages are helpful and where visitors get stuck. Its code is present on every page but runs in Google's consent mode: until you accept analytics in the cookie banner, it is told that analytics storage is denied, so it sets no cookies and stores no identifier on your device. If you decline, or have not yet chosen, it stays in that mode. We have switched on IP anonymisation, and we have switched off Google signals and advertising features.

With your consent, we measure a small set of actions: starting an enquiry, moving between enquiry steps, submitting an enquiry, clicking the WhatsApp button, downloading a guide, signing up to the newsletter, and clicking our phone number or email address. These events tell us what visitors find useful. They help us improve the site and are not used to advertise to you.

Google Analytics 4 normally sets two cookies. Google controls these cookies and their typical defaults, so the details below describe what Google usually does rather than a setting we choose. If you accept and later withdraw your consent, the analytics cookies are removed and Google Analytics stops running on your visits.

  • _ga: tells visits from different visitors apart. Third party (Google), typically about two years.
  • _ga_ followed by our container identifier: keeps session state for Google Analytics 4. Third party (Google), typically about two years.
  • Cookies are set only after you accept analytics, and removed if you withdraw consent.
  • IP anonymisation on. Google signals and advertising features off.

Section 08

What we do not use

No advertising cookies, no social pixels, no cross-site tracking and no selling of data.

We do not use advertising cookies on this website, and we do not show you adverts based on where you have been online. We do not follow you from our site to other sites, and we do not build a profile of your interests to sell or share for advertising.

We do not install social media pixels or tracking buttons. Those are small pieces of code that report your visit back to a social network. Our site does not contain them, so a social network is not told which of our pages you read.

We do not sell your data, whatever your cookie choice. The cookies and storage described in this policy exist to run the site, to protect our forms and, with your consent, to understand how the site is used.

  • No advertising or retargeting cookies.
  • No social media pixels.
  • No cross-site tracking.
  • No selling of data.

Section 09

Browser storage we use

Four small items in your browser's session and local storage, each with a clear job.

Our site keeps four items in your browser's storage. They are not cookies and are not sent to our servers each time you load a page. They exist to make the enquiry form and the free-guide offer work smoothly and politely.

The first, lemala:enquiry-draft, saves an unfinished enquiry so that you can pick up where you left off if you close the form by mistake. It is cleared when you submit the enquiry. The second, lemala:attribution, holds the page you landed on, where you came from and any campaign tags for the visit, so that they can be attached to an enquiry if you send one.

The third, lemala:offer-shown, remembers that the free-guide offer has already appeared during your visit, so we do not show it twice. The fourth, lemala:lead-captured, is kept in local storage and remembers that you have asked for a guide, so the offer does not return. Session items stay only in that browser tab session, and you can clear the local item from your browser settings at any time.

  • lemala:enquiry-draft (session storage): saves an unfinished enquiry. Cleared on submit and ends with the tab session.
  • lemala:attribution (session storage): holds landing page, referrer and campaign tags for the visit. Ends with the tab session.
  • lemala:offer-shown (session storage): notes that the guide offer was shown. Ends with the tab session.
  • lemala:lead-captured (local storage): notes that a guide was requested. Stays until you clear it.

Section 10

Spam protection and Cloudflare Turnstile

Our forms use a Cloudflare check to tell people from automated programs.

Our forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to keep out automated spam. When you use a form, Cloudflare runs a short challenge in your browser to decide whether you are a real person. To do this, Cloudflare may use limited browser storage or cookies of its own. We do not set these ourselves and we do not control their names or lifetimes.

Because this check protects our forms and your enquiry from abuse, it is part of keeping the site secure. Cloudflare explains how Turnstile works, and what it stores, in its own documentation, and we encourage you to read it if you want the technical detail.

Alongside Turnstile, our forms contain a hidden field that people never see but automated programs often fill in. We also limit how often a form can be sent. For that, we use a salted hash of your IP address rather than the address itself. A hash is a scrambled value that cannot easily be turned back into the original address.

  • Cloudflare Turnstile: third party (Cloudflare), may use limited storage or cookies to run its challenge.
  • Purpose: protects forms from spam and abuse.
  • Lifetime and exact names: set by Cloudflare, see its documentation.

Section 11

Embedded services and links

WhatsApp and maps are handled by other companies under their own rules.

Our WhatsApp button opens a link to WhatsApp with a message already written for you. Once you are in WhatsApp, the conversation is handled by WhatsApp, which is run by Meta, under its own terms and privacy notice. We do not place a WhatsApp or Meta tracking cookie on our site because of this button.

Some pages may link to maps or to other websites. When you follow a link to another website, that website may set its own cookies, and they are covered by that website's own policy, not ours. We suggest checking the policy of any site you visit.

Our fonts are served from our own site and are built into it, so your browser does not request fonts from Google when you load our pages. This keeps one more third party out of your visit.

  • WhatsApp: opens a wa.me link with a pre-filled message. Handled by WhatsApp (Meta) under its own terms.
  • Links to other websites: governed by those websites' own cookie policies.
  • Fonts: self-hosted, so no font requests go to Google from your browser.

Section 12

Language preference

If language switching is enabled, the site may remember the language you chose.

At the moment our website is available in English. We plan to add more languages. If language switching is enabled in future, the way the site routes visitors to a language version may set a small first-party cookie that remembers the language you picked.

The purpose would be simple: to show you the pages in your chosen language on your next visit, without asking again. Such a cookie would contain only your language choice, and would not identify you or be shared with anyone.

If we do add language switching, we will update this policy and list the cookie by name, with its purpose and lifetime, before it goes live.

Section 13

How to change your choice on this site

You can accept, decline or withdraw analytics at any time.

The first time you visit, a cookie banner asks whether you accept analytics. You can accept or decline, and the site works in the same way either way. Your answer is saved in the lemala_consent cookie so the banner does not keep returning.

You can change your mind whenever you like. Use the Cookie settings link in the footer of any page to open your choices again. If you switch analytics off after having accepted them, we stop running Google Analytics 4 and remove its cookies, so that no further analytics information is collected from your visits.

Withdrawing consent does not affect anything we did with your information while consent was in place. It simply stops further collection from the moment you choose.

  • Find the Cookie settings link in the footer of every page.
  • Choose accept or decline for analytics at any time.
  • Withdrawing consent removes the analytics cookies and stops Google Analytics 4.

Section 14

How to control cookies in your browser

Every major browser lets you see, block and delete cookies and stored data.

As well as using our cookie settings, you can control cookies through your browser. Most browsers let you see which cookies are stored, delete some or all of them, and block cookies from particular sites or from every site. The menus differ from browser to browser, so look for settings called privacy, security or site data.

You can also clear session storage and local storage from the same area. Closing a browser tab clears session storage for that tab, and clearing site data removes local storage. Private or incognito windows normally discard cookies and stored data when you close them.

If you use more than one browser or device, you need to set your preferences on each one, because cookies and storage belong to a single browser on a single device.

  • Look in your browser settings under privacy, security or site data.
  • Delete cookies and site data to remove everything stored by lemalasafaris.com.
  • Use a private window if you prefer nothing to be kept after you close it.

Section 15

What happens if you block cookies

The site still works, though a few conveniences may be lost.

You can block all cookies and browser storage and still use our website. You can read every page, look through safaris and send us an enquiry. Nothing essential to browsing depends on the optional cookies.

A few small conveniences may stop working. If the lemala_consent cookie cannot be saved, the cookie banner may appear again on later visits. If session storage is blocked, an unfinished enquiry may not be saved, so closing the form could mean starting that form again. The free-guide offer may also be shown more than once.

If you block cookies or storage that Cloudflare Turnstile needs, a form may not pass its spam check. If that happens, allow the site to use storage, or contact us directly by email or WhatsApp, and we will be glad to help.

Section 16

How long things last

A quick reference for the lifetime of each cookie and storage item.

Different items last for different lengths of time. Session items disappear when you close the tab, while the consent cookie lasts for about six months so that we do not ask you repeatedly. The analytics cookies last as long as Google sets them to, and only exist if you accepted analytics.

The lifetimes below are typical figures. Cookies set by other companies, such as Google and Cloudflare, are controlled by those companies, so their exact lifetimes may differ from what we describe. Where we set the item ourselves, the figure is the one our site uses.

You can remove any of these items sooner by clearing your browser data, or by using the Cookie settings link in the footer for analytics.

  • lemala_consent: about six months.
  • lemala_admin: staff only, up to seven days.
  • _ga and _ga_ cookies: typically about two years, only with consent.
  • Session storage items: until the tab session ends.
  • lemala:lead-captured (local storage): until you clear it.

Section 17

Changes to this policy

We will update this page when our use of cookies changes.

We may change this policy from time to time, for example when we add a language, a new feature or a new service that uses cookies or browser storage. The date at the top of the page shows when it was last updated, which at present is 16 October 2026.

If we ever introduce a new optional cookie, we will ask for your consent before it is set, and we will describe it here. We will not add advertising cookies or social media pixels without first changing this policy and asking for your clear agreement.

We encourage you to look at this page now and then. Your cookie choice is stored for about six months, so you will have a regular chance to review it.

Section 18

Quick answers

Questions people ask

No. You can decline analytics and still read every page and send an enquiry. Only the small cookie that remembers your choice is set regardless, because the banner needs it to work.

Yes, at any time. Use the Cookie settings link in the footer to open your choices. If you withdraw analytics, Google Analytics 4 stops and its cookies are removed.

No. We use no advertising cookies, no social media pixels and no cross-site tracking, and we do not sell data. Analytics, if you accept them, measure activity on our own site only.

The site still works. You may see the cookie banner again on later visits, and an unfinished enquiry may not be saved if you close the form. A form check from Cloudflare may also need some storage to run.

Only the lemala_consent cookie, which remembers your choice. The enquiry form also uses a few items of browser storage, and Cloudflare may use limited storage for its spam check.
