About Tortils Ngorongoro Camp

Tortils Ngorongoro Camp is a budget-friendly tented camp in the highlands, and the photographs show how well it hides in its surroundings. From the air the tent roofs almost vanish beneath the forest canopy, and from the ground each tent is ringed by tall trees.

It is a sensible choice for travellers who want to keep costs down on the crater leg of a longer trip without sleeping badly. Inside, the photographs show canopy beds draped in mosquito netting, where a couple sits reading, and an en-suite bathroom finished with slatted wood partitions.

The grounds are planted and wooded, and there is a restaurant on site for evening meals. Do not expect resort extras, but do expect a calm, green base that is well placed for the descent into Ngorongoro, with enough comfort to make the early crater starts that much easier.

  • Safari tents set among dense, tall forest trees
  • Canopy beds with mosquito netting in the tents
  • En-suite bathrooms with slatted wood partitions
  • On-site restaurant for dinners after crater days
  • Garden grounds and a cool, shaded atmosphere
  • Good-value choice within a longer itinerary

Setting

The camp lies in the Ngorongoro Highlands, where cooler air and tree cover replace the open plains seen elsewhere in northern Tanzania. Tents are scattered through dense forest, so the feeling is private and sheltered, with birdsong in the canopy and a sense of being tucked away. It is a quiet stop between busier days in the parks.

Rooms and tents

Guest accommodation is in safari tents among the trees, with canopy beds draped in mosquito netting and en-suite bathrooms in the photographs. The slatted wood partitions give the bathrooms a natural look. The style is comfortable and practical rather than lavish, so ask us for specifics on bedding arrangements, heating and family options before you book.

Dining

A full-service restaurant is part of the camp, so you can expect to eat on site after long days on safari. The offering is probably simple and hearty rather than elaborate, which suits the camp's value-minded approach. Tell us about dietary needs ahead of arrival and we will let the team know, and ask us whether packed lunches are available for crater days.

Things to do from here

  • Crater descent for a full day of game viewing
  • Birdwatching among the forest trees
  • Garden and forest-edge walks around camp
  • Visit to Lake Magadi's flamingos on a crater day

When to stay

The Ngorongoro area is usually best from January to March and from June to October, when drier conditions help on the crater floor and in the highlands. The forest is cool at any time of year. Long rains usually fall from March to May and the short rains in November and December, when mist and showers are likely and the trees are at their greenest.

Good to know

  • Forest and highland air is cooler and damper than the plains, so pack warm layers and a rain jacket.
  • Tented camps in woodland can have limited power and variable signal, so bring spare batteries.
  • Ask us to confirm child policies and tent arrangements for families before booking.
  • Transfers and the crater itinerary are arranged by Lemala, including flight connections where relevant.
