Hippo-choked pools, huge buffalo herds and the loneliest bush in Tanzania
Katavi sits far out in western Tanzania, and a whole day's drive can pass without meeting another vehicle. Across 4,471 km² of miombo woodland, wide floodplain and seasonal lakes, you see Tanzania unfiltered: animals going about their lives as though no one were looking.
The headline event comes in the dry season. The Katuma River and its floodplain lakes contract, and thousands of hippos are forced into ever-smaller pools in crowded, sometimes violent scenes that rank among Africa's most overlooked wildlife spectacles. The same pressure pulls in buffalo herds of well over a thousand animals and big lion prides that follow them, plus elephant, roan antelope and puku, a species seen in few other Tanzanian parks.
Isolation defines the experience. Game drives feel like expeditions, not routine outings, and having an enormous wilderness all to yourself is a rarity across Africa, never mind in the busier north.
July to October is when Katavi shows its most dramatic concentrations, and it is clearly the best time to visit. The park is reached only by light aircraft, so it is a serious, remote addition for experienced safari travellers chasing Tanzania's rawest bush, frequently combined with the Mahale Mountains as a full western circuit.
