Cities, islands and Sukuma culture around the source of the Nile
Lake Victoria is shared by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. It is the biggest lake in Africa by surface area and the largest tropical lake in the world, and it is historically important as the source region of the Nile. For all that, it remains one of the least-explored parts of Tanzania for visitors from abroad.
Rubondo Island National Park lies entirely within the lake and tells an unusual conservation story. Decades ago, chimpanzees, elephants, giraffes and other species were brought to this wooded island refuge, and today they flourish in surroundings with no equivalent elsewhere in Tanzania. Native sitatunga antelope live here too, along with abundant birds, including the African fish eagle.
Mwanza, Tanzania's principal city on the lake, introduces the Sukuma people, the biggest ethnic group in the country, by way of its museum and craft markets. Nile perch and tilapia fishing drives the busy lakeside markets. Sunset cruises glide past the smooth, rounded granite outcrops that line the shoreline, a highlight for travellers who venture this far off the usual route.
June to October is the most comfortable time to explore. The appeal here is less about classic game viewing and more about cultural depth and discovery. Lake Victoria suits anyone drawn to Rubondo's story or keen to see a side of Tanzania far from the safari circuit, and it is commonly combined with Katavi or Mahale in a wider western itinerary.
