About Africa Amini Original Maasai Lodge

Set on the western side of Kilimanjaro, this lodge is run by Maasai hosts and designed around real contact with the neighbouring community. The aim is exchange rather than performance, so conversations, shared meals and local knowledge matter more than staged entertainment. It suits travellers who like to understand the place they are visiting.

The look is earthy and warm, with stone walls, carved wooden doors and splashes of red Maasai cloth. A pool terrace looks across rolling hills, and Maasai hosts in traditional dress are part of the welcome rather than a costume for the cameras. The mood is welcoming, unhurried and rooted in the land around it.

It is also a calm place to slow down. A thatched wellness room offers yoga and meditation, which makes the lodge a gentle contrast to long game drives and a good place to recover before or after a mountain, or simply to ease into northern Tanzania at a gentler pace than usual.

  • Run by Maasai hosts with a real focus on community
  • Oval infinity pool looking across rolling savanna hills
  • Stone-walled rooms with carved wooden doors and red cloth accents
  • Freestanding tubs in curved stone bathrooms with savanna views
  • Thatched yoga and wellness room with woven mats
  • Easy base for Kilimanjaro and the northern parks

Setting

The lodge sits on the western slopes of Kilimanjaro, where cultivated highland gives way to open savanna. From the pool terrace and many of the rooms you look out over rolling hills, and the mountain itself is a constant presence when the cloud lifts. It feels rural and unhurried, with the surrounding Maasai community close at hand.

Rooms and tents

Rooms are built from stone, with carved wooden doors and a rustic, handmade character that glows warmly at dusk. Bathrooms are a highlight, with a freestanding tub in a curved stone space draped in red fabric and a window onto the savanna. Expect a sense of place rather than generic hotel styling, with local textiles used throughout.

Dining

Meals are taken at the lodge, and the Maasai hosts are a natural source of stories about the food, the land and the community around you. Expect hearty, well-prepared dishes after a day of walking or travelling, with the pool terrace a pleasant spot for a drink before dinner. Tell us about any dietary requirements in advance so the kitchen can plan.

Things to do from here

  • Guided cultural exchange with Maasai hosts
  • Community and boma visits
  • Yoga and meditation in the wellness room
  • Walks across the surrounding savanna
  • Relaxing by the infinity pool

When to stay

Dry, clearer weather from June to October gives the best chance of open views of the mountain, and January to March is also a rewarding time in this highland region. The long rains arrive roughly from March to May, bringing cloud and green hills, and the short rains follow around November and December. Evenings on the slopes can feel cool, so a warm layer is worth packing year-round.

Good to know

  • Activities and community visits are led by the hosts, so ask us to confirm what is available on your dates.
  • Mountain visibility varies with cloud, so treat views of Kilimanjaro as a pleasant bonus.
  • Ask us to confirm facilities such as wellness sessions and any additional costs before you travel.
  • Lemala arranges transfers from Arusha and Kilimanjaro airports and onward to your next stop.
