About Ikuka Camp

Ikuka Camp is built on a rocky outcrop high above the Ruaha River, in the kind of country that rewards travellers who go the extra distance. Ruaha is one of Tanzania's larger and quieter parks, and this exclusive camp makes the most of that sense of space, with long views across the wild landscape.

The photographs tell the story well. A thatched main lodge perches among the rocks, with an open-sided lounge of leather sofas looking out across the Ruaha hills. Bedrooms open onto private decks for sunset, and the bathrooms are open to the air, with stone basins and thatch above, so the wilderness is never far from sight.

In the evening there is a private plunge pool and a lantern-lit dinner table set for dusk. It is an intimate, atmospheric way to stay in Ruaha, ideal for travellers who want comfort and character in equal measure, along with wide-open country, big skies and very little traffic.

  • Thatched camp perched on a rocky outcrop above the river
  • Open-sided lounge with leather sofas and sweeping hill views
  • Private decks for watching the sun set over the wilderness
  • Open-air bathrooms with stone basins under thatch
  • Private plunge pool and lantern-lit dinners at dusk
  • Set in one of Tanzania's largest, least-crowded parks

Setting

The camp sits on rocks overlooking the Ruaha River, the lifeline of a vast, rugged park in central Tanzania. From this height you look across bushland and hills, and the river below draws wildlife in the dry season. Ruaha is known for its big lion population, and for species such as roan and sable antelope that are not seen on the northern circuit.

Rooms and tents

Accommodation is thatched and open to the landscape. Photographs show bedrooms with private decks facing the bush, open-air bathrooms with stone basins and views through the thatch, and a private plunge pool. Expect natural materials, large openings and a strong sense of being in the wild. Ask us about room layouts, as they can differ across the camp.

Dining

Dining is a relaxed, atmospheric affair. The restaurant serves meals from a thatched lounge with leather sofas, and in the evening a lantern-lit table is laid out above the plunge pool, with the landscape fading into dusk. Expect fresh, thoughtfully prepared food suited to a remote camp. Ask us to pass on dietary needs and celebrations in advance.

Things to do from here

  • Game drives through Ruaha's rugged bushland
  • Walking safaris where the camp and area allow
  • Sundowners on the rocks above the river
  • Watching wildlife from the camp deck
  • Night drives, where permitted, with Lemala to confirm

When to stay

Ruaha is best from June to October, in the dry season, when animals gather along the Ruaha River and the bush thins out, making sightings easier. The long rains usually fall from roughly March to May, turning the park green, while the short rains come in November and December. Dry-season days can be warm, with cool mornings and evenings, so layers are useful.

Good to know

  • Ruaha is remote, and transfers are often by light aircraft. Lemala arranges these and confirms schedules.
  • Connectivity and power can be limited at remote camps. Ask us what to expect before you travel.
  • Open-air bathrooms and rocky terrain suit mobile guests. Ask us about accessibility and child policies before booking.
  • Wildlife is wild, so sightings vary. The dry season usually offers the best chance near the river.
