About Ruaha River Lodge

Ruaha River Lodge is scattered along the banks of the Great Ruaha River, in one of Tanzania's largest national parks. Ruaha is rugged, wide and far quieter than the northern circuit, and the lodge reflects that character with stone, thatch and a pleasingly unpolished bush feel. It rewards travellers who prefer atmosphere to gloss.

The river is the heart of the place. A private deck overlooks the rocky riverbed, and guests can watch the water and its visitors without leaving camp. Animals come to drink as the day warms, though sightings are never guaranteed and patience is part of the experience.

A thatched open-air dining pavilion sits under acacia trees, and a thatched bar is decorated with zebra-print seating that echoes the wildlife outside. Ruaha is known for lions, wild dog and sable and roan antelope, so this is a good stay for travellers who want wild country without the crowds. Evenings are for quiet drinks, big skies and listening to the bush.

Setting

The lodge lies along the Great Ruaha River, in rugged, open country of acacia, baobab and rocky riverbed. Ruaha has fewer visitors than the northern circuit, so game drives often feel private. The river can shrink in the dry months, concentrating wildlife along its channels. Expect hot days, cooler evenings and a strong sense of being a long way from anywhere else.

Rooms and tents

Rooms are stone-walled and simple, with twin beds and zebra-print cushions that add a playful note. Photographs show a comfortable lounge area, and the decks overlooking the river are where many guests spend downtime. The style is characterful rather than polished, fitting the lodge's mid-range position. Ask us about double beds, family arrangements or river-facing rooms, and we will check with the lodge.

Dining

Meals are taken in the thatched open-air dining pavilion, shaded by acacia trees and lit by the evening sun. Being open on the sides, it keeps you close to the sounds of the bush. The bar nearby is a relaxed meeting place at the end of a drive. Tell us about any dietary needs before you travel so the kitchen can prepare.

Things to do from here

  • Morning and afternoon game drives across Ruaha
  • Watching the river from your private deck
  • Searching for lion, wild dog and cheetah
  • Birdwatching along the Great Ruaha River
  • Sundowners at the thatched bar

When to stay

Ruaha is at its best from June to October, the dry season, when vegetation thins and animals gather along the Great Ruaha River. Game viewing is usually strongest toward the later dry months. November and December bring the short rains, and the long rains, roughly March to May, turn the park green and make some tracks harder going. Days are warm to hot, and evenings are comfortable.

Good to know

  • Ruaha is remote, and transfers are usually by road or light aircraft. Lemala arranges them and can explain the options.
  • Wildlife is wild and sightings cannot be promised, though Ruaha is known for strong lion and elephant populations.
  • Power and connectivity are often limited in bush lodges. Ask us what to expect before you travel.
