About Kirurumu Manyara Lodge

Kirurumu sits high on the Rift Valley escarpment, and everything about it is arranged around looking out. The camp stands above Lake Manyara National Park, so the valley floor, the forest and the glint of the lake all lie spread beneath you. It is a very practical base for a visit to the park, at a friendly price.

Photographs show an open-air lounge tent that frames the sweep of the valley, and private decks with a table and chairs perched on the edge of the drop. Suites have four-poster beds with sheer curtains, and the lake is a faint presence in the distance when you wake up.

Evenings end at a fire pit with director's chairs and safari lanterns, which makes the camp feel sociable without being loud. There is a pool for the hot hours, a full restaurant and WiFi, so Kirurumu works well for travellers who like comfort without a luxury bill.

Setting

The camp is perched along the Rift Valley escarpment above Lake Manyara, which means the landscape drops away in front of the tents. Below lie the park's groundwater forest, its acacia woodland and the shallow soda lake, where flamingos can gather in season. At night the valley goes dark and quiet, and the sky tends to be the main attraction.

Rooms and tents

Guests sleep in tented rooms along the escarpment, and the suites shown in photographs have four-poster beds hung with sheer curtains and a distant view of the lake. Many tents have a private deck with a table and chairs for taking in the view. As with most tented lodges, expect canvas walls and a gentle sense of being outdoors.

Dining

There is a full-service restaurant, and mealtimes make the most of the outlook, with tables that look out across the valley. Guests can usually expect a mix of hearty set meals and lighter lunches. After dinner, the fire pit and lanterns invite a drink under the stars. Ask us about dietary needs before you travel so the kitchen can prepare.

Things to do from here

  • Game drives in Lake Manyara National Park
  • Birdwatching, including flamingos and pelicans on the lake
  • Sundowners on the deck
  • Cultural visits in nearby villages, arranged by Lemala
  • Evenings by the fire pit

When to stay

The dry months of June to November are the favoured window for Lake Manyara, with clearer views across the valley and animals drawn to permanent water. The long rains usually run from March to May and bring green scenery but muddier tracks, while the short rains in November and December tend to be brief. Flamingo numbers on the lake change with the water level, so expect variation.

Good to know

  • The camp is on a steep escarpment, so expect some walking on paths and steps between tents.
  • WiFi is available, though signal in the Rift Valley can vary. Do not rely on it for large uploads.
  • Lemala arranges all transfers and park visits. Ask us to confirm child policies for your dates.
  • Wildlife in the park is wild, so sightings depend on the day and cannot be guaranteed.
