Tanzania in June at a glance

Dry season begins

  • The weather

The rains have gone. Skies are clear, days are warm and nights are cool, and the roads are firm.

  • Where the herds are

The herds gather in the western corridor, where the Grumeti River cuts through woodland. The Grumeti crossings are smaller and less predictable than those at the Mara, with large crocodiles and few vehicles. The rut continues.

  • The parks

Serengeti in June works well, though the grass is still tall in places. Tarangire starts to fill with elephants as the river shrinks, and the dry season suits Ruaha and Nyerere.

  • Kilimanjaro

Late June opens the second climbing window, running to October, with clearer skies and firmer trails.

  • Zanzibar and the coast

The cooler, drier southeast wind blows from about June to September, which makes for pleasant beach days.

  • Crowds and rates

The start of the busy season, with rates rising and the better camps filling earlier.

Planning a trip in June

  • Good for

First safari, Tarangire elephants, Western Serengeti

  • Watch out for

Tall grass can make some sightings harder than in July and August.

  • What to pack

Warm layers for dawn and evening, sun protection and a hat.
