About Lake Burunge Baobab Tented Lodge

A baobab tree rises straight through the wraparound deck here, and that single detail captures the personality of Lake Burunge Baobab Tented Lodge. It stands at the edge of Lake Burunge on the Tarangire boundary, in a landscape of old trees, big elephants and long views across the water.

Guests stay in tented rooms with white canopy beds and wicker armchairs, in a row facing the lake. The main building is thatched, with a pool beside it and gardens around the grounds. At dusk the tents glow under moody skies, and the baobab silhouettes darken against a sunset that guests tend to mention first.

It is a good budget-friendly base for the Tarangire leg of a northern circuit, and a pleasant place to rest between drives. WiFi, a full restaurant and a swimming pool take care of the practical side, leaving evenings free for the lake and the light.

  • An ancient baobab growing through the wooden wraparound deck
  • Sunsets that sweep straight across Lake Burunge
  • Tented rooms with white canopy beds and wicker armchairs
  • Swimming pool beside the thatched main lodge
  • Garden grounds, a full restaurant and WiFi
  • On the edge of Tarangire National Park

Setting

The lodge sits on the shore of Lake Burunge, a shallow lake along the boundary of Tarangire National Park. Giant baobabs, some believed to be a thousand years old in this region, stand close to the buildings, and the lake attracts birds. The wider area is known for elephant herds, and the open sky at sunset makes the whole shoreline glow.

Rooms and tents

Tented rooms have white canopy beds, wicker armchairs and a light, airy feel, with the lake on their doorstep. They are arranged in a row so that most have a view, and lanterns and lamps light the line at dusk. Expect a comfortable, practical standard, with canvas walls that keep you close to the sounds of the bush at night.

Dining

The full-service restaurant is in the thatched main building, and a wooden deck built around the baobab makes an atmospheric place for a drink. Guests can usually expect hearty buffet or set meals suited to a long day outdoors, with the sunset as the backdrop. Please tell us of any dietary needs before arrival so the team can prepare.

Things to do from here

  • Game drives in Tarangire National Park
  • Sunset drinks on the baobab deck
  • Birdwatching on the lakeshore
  • Swimming in the pool between drives
  • Cultural visits nearby, arranged through Lemala

When to stay

Tarangire is best from June to October, when the dry season draws elephants, zebra and wildebeest to the river and the park becomes easier to read. The lake edge is pleasant for sunsets in those months, with clearer skies and drier roads. The long rains usually fall from March to May and the short rains in November and December, so expect green scenery and muddier tracks then.

Good to know

  • The lodge is on the park boundary rather than inside Tarangire, so Lemala arranges the drives into the park.
  • WiFi is offered, though signal can be uneven. Plan for patchy connectivity at a lakeside camp.
  • Ask us to confirm child policies and room arrangements for families.
  • Lake levels and bird numbers change with the season, and wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
