About Hamerkop House by Lemala

Hamerkop House is a private house on the Kiligolf wildlife and golf estate, roughly halfway between Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha. It is managed by Lemala Camps and Lodges, and it works beautifully as a soft landing before a safari or a slow decompression at the end of one.

It can be taken for exclusive use or on a shared basis, which suits couples, families and small groups travelling together. Every bedroom is en suite and opens onto its own verandah and lounge, so there is room to spread out as well as to gather.

The estate gives the stay more to do than most airport-side overnights. There is an 18-hole championship golf course, horse riding, a polo club and, on a clear evening, sundowners with Meru and Kilimanjaro as the backdrop.

  • Four en-suite bedrooms, each with a verandah and lounge
  • Exclusive use or shared stays, for groups of any mix
  • Private chefs for breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner
  • Swimming pool and garden with sundowner spots
  • Spa treatments available daily
  • Kilimanjaro and Meru views from the estate

Setting

The house sits inside a private wildlife and golf estate in the foothills between Arusha and Kilimanjaro airport. Gardens run down to a swimming pool, and a short walk leads to a viewpoint on the golf course where Meru and Kilimanjaro both fill the horizon. It is green, quiet and very different from the parks ahead, which is exactly the point.

Rooms and tents

Four spacious en-suite bedrooms share the house, each with a private verandah and a sitting area. Photographs show soft white linen, warm wood and large glass doors that open to the garden. Because the whole house can be booked as a single group, it feels more like a friend's country home than a hotel.

Dining

Private chefs prepare breakfasts, light lunches, afternoon teas and dinners, and the house team will cater for dietary needs if told in advance. The dining table seats the whole party inside, with a terrace table by the pool for warmer evenings. Wi-Fi is complimentary, which is handy for the first day back online.

Things to do from here

  • A round on the 18-hole championship golf course
  • Early-morning horse rides across the estate
  • Sundowners with Meru and Kilimanjaro in view
  • A tour of a working coffee plantation near Arusha
  • Hiking or canoeing around Lake Duluti
  • Spa treatments and time by the pool

When to stay

Arusha is pleasant year-round, with the main dry season running roughly from June to October and a second drier spell in January and February. The long rains arrive from about March to May and the short rains in November and December, when the estate is at its greenest. Clear mornings give the best Kilimanjaro views, especially in the dry months.

Good to know

  • The house can be booked for exclusive use or on a shared basis. Ask us which option suits your party.
  • It sits close to Kilimanjaro airport, so it works well for late arrivals and early departures. We arrange the transfers.
  • Children are welcome. Ask us about family arrangements and the Lemala Cubs programme.
  • Dietary needs are catered for when we tell the team in advance, so share them with us early.
