About Original Maasai Lodge

Original Maasai Lodge is a Maasai-owned lodge in West Kilimanjaro, on open savanna at the foot of the mountain. It is a different property from the Africa Amini Original Maasai Lodge, and it has its own identity, rooted in the community that runs it. Expect a stay shaped by local people and local customs.

Hospitality here is personal. Photographs show Maasai staff serving drinks by the plunge pool and warriors in traditional shuka gathering around the thatched lodge, then singing around an evening campfire. For many guests, this cultural warmth is the real reason to stay. It is a stay where people matter as much as scenery.

Accommodation is split between standard rooms and a premium Kisiwa Boma suite category, with red linens beneath a thatched roof. The grounds are gardens and plains, with a restaurant on site. It is a gentle, welcoming stop for travellers who want to meet the region on its own terms.

Setting

The lodge stands on open savanna at the foot of Kilimanjaro, in the West Kilimanjaro area. Plains stretch away from the plunge pool, and gardens soften the thatched buildings. Whether the mountain is visible depends on cloud, and early mornings and evenings are usually the clearest. Expect a quiet, rural setting with real space around you and the cultural life of the Maasai close by.

Rooms and tents

There are two levels of accommodation: standard rooms and the step-up Kisiwa Boma suites. Photographs of the Kisiwa Boma show a bed with red linens beneath a thatched roof, which gives the suites a warm, handcrafted look. Both categories are comfortable rather than lavish. Dining

Meals are served in the lodge's restaurant, and the setting is relaxed and welcoming. Evenings often include time around the campfire, where guests can listen to Maasai songs under the stars. Food is generally simple and hearty, in keeping with the surroundings. If you have dietary needs, tell us before you travel so we can pass them on.

When to stay

West Kilimanjaro is generally at its most pleasant in the dry months, roughly June to October, when skies are clearer and the mountain is more often visible. January and February are also bright and warm. The long rains, roughly March to May, bring green plains and heavier cloud, while the short rains usually fall in November and December. Nights at the foot of the mountain can be cool, so pack a warm layer.
