01

Why Tanzania works for a honeymoon

Safari honeymoons have a lore of their own. Years after the flowers have wilted, you remain the couple who watched a lioness guide her cubs across the track on the fourth morning of married life, who had breakfast beside a river, and who fell asleep to far off lion calls before waking to coffee at the tent flap. A honeymoon safari Tanzania style settles the old argument between adventure and indulgence by refusing to pick a side.

The bush supplies the wonder and the island supplies the lie-in. Tanzania offers both in one country, with one visa and a short flight between them. This guide covers how we would build the trip for two, what to ask for, when to go and what to avoid. It works equally well as an anniversary safari, a milestone birthday trip or a long overdue holiday for two, and the advice on pace, privacy and timing applies whatever the occasion. If you are unsure whether the bush suits you both, say so early, because an honest conversation at the start saves disappointment later.

02

Safari first, then the beach

The classic bush and beach honeymoon runs in that order, and for newlyweds it is close to a rule. Use the early alarms while the excitement of the wedding still carries you, then arrive on the island with nothing to do except recover. Ending a honeymoon with pre dawn game drives is something we avoid, and most couples agree once they have tried the other way round.

The usual shape is four to six days in the bush and three or four nights by the sea. Tarangire, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater fit neatly into that. A shorter trip squeezes both halves, so we rarely recommend fewer than eight days in total. If the bush is your headline, you can drop the island and add nights instead, and we are happy to build a safari only version.

03

Romantic touches that are worth asking for

Tanzanian camps compete on romance, and a lot can be arranged if you tell them in advance. Routine touches include room decoration, a cake, sparkling wine on arrival and breakfast on your deck. A candlelit dinner away from the other guests is common, and a bush dinner under a lantern lit sky is one of the best evenings you can have, with the guide waiting politely out of sight.

Sundowners are the simplest romance of all. Your guide stops at a quiet spot as the sun drops, sets out drinks and snacks, and leaves you to watch the light change. On the Serengeti plains a hot air balloon flight at sunrise is the showpiece, with a breakfast on landing and a toast in the grass. It is a paid extra and worth doing once.

Ask about private touches too: a private beach dinner on Zanzibar, a sunset dhow cruise just for the two of you, or a small vow renewal ceremony if you are marking an anniversary. Showpiece extras are paid add ons, but the small gestures often cost little when arranged ahead. Tell us whether you prefer understated or elaborate and we brief each property to match.

04

Small camp or large lodge

The biggest choice you will make is the type of place to sleep. An intimate tented camp has a handful of tents, personal service, and the sounds of the bush a few feet away. A luxury tented camp still has proper beds, private bathrooms and hot showers, and many offer private decks and plunge pools. Drifting off to lions calling on your honeymoon is the whole idea, and canvas walls do not spoil it.

Larger lodges offer more facilities: a spa, a swimming pool, a bar and more restaurants. They are well suited to couples who like some energy around them or who want a longer rest between drives. The trade off is less privacy and a more lodge like feel. Many couples choose a small camp for the Serengeti and a larger lodge for the crater highlands, where views matter more than silence.

When you weigh small camp or large lodge, think about what you want from the evenings. If you want to be alone, pick the smallest camp you can. If you like conversation, a lodge's lounge and bar are easier. Either way, ask whether honeymoon touches are included, how many tents or rooms there are, and how far your tent is from the main area.

  • Small camps: fewer than a dozen tents, privacy, personal service, simple facilities
  • Large lodges: pools, spas, more dining choice, more activity and more guests
  • Ask how private the tent is, how far it is from the dining area and whether it has a deck or plunge pool

05

The pace of a couples safari

A couples safari can be paced however you like, and the private guide is the reason. Dawn is the best time to drive, but it is a suggestion, not a rule. Your guide can build the day around a lie-in, since the crater and Tarangire both reward a mid morning start. On a honeymoon, sleep counts as part of the experience, and nobody should be made to feel they must be up at five.

Most days follow a gentle shape: a morning drive, a long break at camp for lunch and a nap, and a late afternoon drive that ends with sundowners. Give yourselves a rest day in the middle of the route if you can. Time at camp is also time together, and many couples say the quiet afternoons beside a river are what they remember most.

06

Best months for couples

The best time for a honeymoon in Tanzania depends on what you want. June to October is the favourite window, with the strongest game viewing inland, dry weather and calm beach days on Zanzibar. It is also the busiest time, and the most romantic rooms can sell out many months ahead, especially for August. For a trip in those months we suggest starting six to twelve months out.

December to February is warm and green, and suits Christmas and Valentine's weddings. The southern plains of the Serengeti have calving season in this period, which brings newborn animals and predators, and the beach is hot. March to May is the long rains: some camps close and showers are real, but couples willing to gamble find the lodges almost empty and priced for the green season.

If your wedding falls in the rains, we would reshape the route rather than ask you to move the date. A green season honeymoon can mean dramatic skies, fewer vehicles and better value, with more time at the lodge and less in the vehicle. Birds are at their best, and dust is minimal, which also helps photography.

07

Zanzibar beaches for couples

A Zanzibar honeymoon starts with choosing the right coast. Nungwi, at the northern tip, has white sand, clear water, a range of restaurants and beautiful sunsets, and it is livelier than the others. Kendwa, a short distance south, has a broad beach where swimming works at any hour because the tide barely changes. Many couples find Kendwa the calmer of the two.

On the east coast, Paje and Jambiani are known for kitesurfing and wide sandbanks at low tide, and swimming depends on the tide. They suit active couples more than those who want quiet. Further north on the east side, Matemwe is a quieter stretch with small, secluded properties, and it is the nearest base for the Mnemba Atoll, a marine reserve reached by boat for snorkelling and diving. Mnemba is a day trip or a luxury island stay rather than a general beach to choose.

Away from the sand, a dhow cruise at sunset, an evening in Stone Town and a spice farm visit make good days out. Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with twisting alleys and carved doors, and it deserves a half day. Plan the island stay with a mix of lazy days and one or two outings, and avoid packing too much.

A sample 10 to 12 day flow

Here is a sample 10 day honeymoon itinerary that follows the pattern on our site. You land in Arusha and take the first night to rest. You then spend a day in Tarangire among elephants and baobabs, two nights in Central Serengeti, and a day on the floor of Ngorongoro Crater. A flight carries you to Zanzibar for four nights at Nungwi, and the last days are yours to arrange.

A 12 day honeymoon itinerary lets you slow down. Add a night in the Serengeti, or a second night in the crater highlands, and stretch the island to five or six nights, including a day trip to Stone Town and a snorkelling trip towards Mnemba Atoll. If you like the idea of something remote, a southern park such as Ruaha or Nyerere can replace the north, and the coast is still a short flight away.

  • Days 1 and 2: arrive, rest, then Tarangire for elephants and baobabs
  • Days 3 and 4: Central Serengeti, with long game drives and breakfast in the bush
  • Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater at dawn, then a highlands lodge with a view
  • Day 6: fly to Zanzibar and swap shoes for sand
  • Days 7 to 10: Nungwi or Kendwa, a dhow cruise, a Stone Town day and a private dinner
  • Days 11 and 12, if you have them: extra nights on the beach or in the bush

09

How long on safari and how long on the beach

People ask us how long on safari and how long on the beach is right for a honeymoon. A good balance is around five days of safari and four of beach, so nine days in total. If the safari is the headline, eight days with six in the bush works. If you need rest, twelve days with a longer beach stay is easier to enjoy without feeling rushed.

Avoid anything under a week, since it pinches both halves. Remember that travel days eat time, and that the journey from the Serengeti to the coast is a full day even by air. Give yourselves a spare night on each side if you are travelling from far away, and do not schedule a pre dawn game drive on the day you fly home.

10

Travelling light, photography and privacy

Travelling light matters because domestic flights have strict limits, commonly around 15 kg (33 lb) per person, including hand luggage. Use one soft duffel each, since rigid suitcases do not fit the aircraft hold. Pack muted layers and a warm fleece for cold mornings, swimwear and reef safe sunscreen for the island, one good dinner outfit each, and cover ups for Stone Town. Lodges wash clothes quickly.

Divide essentials between your two bags in case one goes missing, and carry a copy of your marriage certificate, since lodges sometimes ask for it when arranging honeymoon touches. Photography is a big part of the trip: bring a camera with a decent zoom, spare batteries, and a small power bank. Ask your guide to stop for portraits in good light, and for a quiet moment when you are done.

Privacy is easy to arrange in Tanzania but worth requesting. Tell us if you want a private table at dinner, no group activities and no welcome songs. Say so if you want to keep the news of your honeymoon quiet, or if you want staff to mark it. We pass these notes to every property in advance so you do not have to repeat yourselves.

11

What to tell your operator when booking

The more you share when booking, the better the trip. Tell us your dates, whether you are celebrating an occasion such as a wedding, anniversary or birthday, and what kind of evenings you like. Give us your budget range, your fitness and mobility, any food allergies, and whether you would rather skip the early starts. Lemala Safaris builds the plan around those notes.

Surprises are easy to arrange if you let us know. If you are planning a proposal, a vow renewal or a gift for your partner, tell us in confidence and we will brief the camp discreetly. If you are comparing Tanzania or the Maldives, say so, and we will give you an honest view: the islands win for pure rest and diving, while Tanzania gives you wildlife and a beach in a single trip.

Book early for June to October, and ask us to confirm rooms before you buy international flights. For a green season trip a few weeks can be enough. Health matters too: speak to your doctor about malaria prevention and routine vaccines early, and keep your travel insurance details to hand.
