The experience
Dawn lions on the plains, sunset dhows on the Indian Ocean
A northern Tanzania safari followed by a few slow nights on Zanzibar, linked by one short flight from Arusha. Two very different Tanzanias in a single trip, with the beach as the exhale.
- Serengeti safari followed by Zanzibar beach days
- Stone Town and its spice farms
- Snorkelling and diving around Mnemba Atoll
- Boutique beach properties to choose from
Part of the pleasure is the order of events. One morning you are in a fleece, watching lions wake on the cool golden Serengeti. Two days later you are barefoot on sand so fine it squeaks, choosing between snorkelling and a nap beneath a palm. Your hardest decision is when to reapply sunscreen.
Safari with Zanzibar is one of the most requested trips for good reason: it sets the intensity of the bush against real rest, in two places a short flight apart. Below you will find how the pairing works, how to divide your days, when to travel and what influences the cost.
How the combination works
The formula is straightforward. Give northern Tanzania four to six safari days, most often covering Tarangire, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, and follow with three or four nights on Zanzibar. A brief domestic flight from Arusha links the two: you touch down on the island roughly ninety minutes after leaving the bush, with no lengthy road transfers or a wasted day.
Zanzibar gives you two trips in one. First comes Stone Town, the UNESCO-listed old quarter: a warren of spice markets, ornately carved doors and layer upon layer of Swahili, Arab, Indian and European heritage, worth a minimum of half a day. Then the beaches. Nungwi and Kendwa in the north suit swimmers at any tide and offer lively sunsets, Paje and the east coast bring barefoot calm and kitesurfing, and Mnemba Atoll offshore has the archipelago's best snorkelling and diving.
Why finish a safari on an island
- Rest: safari is wonderful and tiring, with pre-dawn starts, long drives and constant stimulation. Many people fly home from the bush feeling they need a holiday from the holiday. The island lets you digest the trip on a beach instead of a plane.
- Contrast: the bush feels wilder knowing a beach is ahead, and the sea tastes sweeter after a 4x4 at six in the morning. That pairing has made this the standard East African honeymoon.
- Simplicity: both halves sit in one country on one visa with one connecting flight. Compared with combining a safari and the Seychelles or Mauritius, Zanzibar usually costs less and trims hours off the journey.
Timing both halves
Jan to Dec
Conveniently, the finest safari weather and the finest beach weather largely overlap. From June to October you get dry-season wildlife viewing together with warm, less humid days by the sea. The period from December to February runs hotter and brings the inland calving season, which is superb, although by February the island feels thoroughly tropical.
The long rains fall from March to May across the mainland and the coast. Certain beach resorts and safari camps shut, and although prices are lowest, expect real afternoon downpours. The short rains of November are gentler: brief showers, calmer beaches and shoulder-season pricing. A word of warning about the dry months: demand peaks in July and August on Zanzibar's north coast, so reserve early or settle on the east coast, which is a lovely alternative.
A sample shape for the trip
Days 1 and 2
Tarangire and Manyara
Herds of elephants under baobab trees, plus the opening picnic lunch of many, eaten with a view.
Days 3 and 4
Serengeti
Two entire days within the core of the ecosystem for predators, plains and, in season, the migration.
Day 5
Ngorongoro Crater
A dawn descent into the crater for some of the best odds of the Big Five in Africa, then back to Arusha.
Day 6
Flight to Zanzibar
A short morning flight puts you on the island by lunch. A Stone Town stop on the way to the coast is optional.
Days 7 to 9
Island time
Beach, spice farm, Mnemba snorkelling, a sunset dhow cruise, or nothing at all.
What shapes the price
Combined trips are priced by the split and the places you choose. Lemala Safaris will confirm figures for your dates.
- The split: a safari day costs clearly more than a beach day, thanks to park fees, guiding and vehicle logistics, so shifting a day from the bush to the coast brings the total down and shifting the other way pushes it up.
- Beach property: Zanzibar spans charming guesthouses to five-star resorts, so one safari can finish at very different price points.
- Season: July, August and the Christmas to New Year period carry premium rates on both halves.
- The connecting flight: it is normally included, and baggage limits on the hop are modest, one of several small details we sort in advance.

Packing for two climates
You are filling one bag for two climates and a modest allowance on the internal flight, so choose soft-sided luggage, ideally under 15 kg. Pack muted layers for the safari half, plus a warm fleece for early mornings, and the island needs very little. A cultural note: Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim, so on Stone Town's streets in particular, keep shoulders and knees covered when you are away from the beach; it is a simple courtesy.
- Soft duffel bag for the internal flight
- Neutral safari layers and a warm fleece
- Swimwear and reef-safe sunscreen
- Modest cover-ups for Stone Town
- Sandals and closed shoes
- Your own snorkel mask if preferred

Questions
Good to know
Most travellers are happiest with five days on safari and four on the beach. Cutting the safari below four days feels hurried given three parks, and cutting the island stay below three hardly gives you time to recover. Honeymooners often stretch the beach portion, and wildlife-focused guests do the opposite.
Safari first, nearly always. The dawn starts and dusty drives suit a fresh traveller, and the beach works as the exhale. Doing it the other way round means finishing your holiday with 5 AM alarms.
The north, around Nungwi and Kendwa, suits swimming at every tide, sunset views and livelier evenings. The east, including Paje, Jambiani and Matemwe, is quieter, good for kitesurfing and more barefoot, with big tides that pull the sea far out twice a day. Neither is wrong; the point is matching your expectations.
It is arguably the classic East African honeymoon finish, with private dinners on the sand, sunset dhow cruises and resorts that take romance seriously. Mention the occasion when you book, since lodges and hotels often add personal touches.
Yes. Mnemba Atoll, off Zanzibar's northeast coast, offers the best reef: clear water, turtles and abundant reef fish. Snorkelling outings depart daily along the north and east shores, and dive centres look after everyone from first-timers to experienced divers.
Yes. A short fly-in safari to Nyerere National Park can be arranged from the island, which suits people basing themselves on Zanzibar who still want a taste of the bush.
It depends on trip length, the safari to beach ratio and the level of accommodation at each end. Ask Lemala Safaris for a quote built on your dates.
