About &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas
This is a mobile tented camp that relocates through the year to stay close to the Great Migration. Rather than driving a long way to find the action, you can step out of your tent in the morning with the open plains already spread in front of you.
The feel is classic safari, with canvas suites, hurricane lanterns, camp chairs and a campfire gathering place under an acacia tree. It is polished without being formal, and the details are those of a long-standing tented tradition rather than a modern hotel. Evenings revolve around the fire, good company and the sounds of the plains.
Because the camp moves, its exact position depends on where the herds are at the time of your stay. Lemala confirms the current site when you book, so your days are planned around the part of the Serengeti that is most alive. Expect a hosted, attentive style of service throughout.
- Camp positioned to follow the movement of the Great Migration
- Canvas suites with en-suite bathrooms on the open grassland
- Full dining tent and campfire seating under an acacia at sunset
- Lounge tent with striped armchairs, backgammon and lantern light
- Verandas with camp chairs for golden-hour coffee and sundowners
- Wake to open Serengeti grassland beyond your tent flap
Setting
The camp sits out on the Serengeti plains, in the northern part of the park at the time of writing, though a mobile camp changes location with the seasons. Around you is wide, open grassland broken by the occasional acacia, with big skies at sunrise and sunset. Expect wildlife to pass close by, and expect the sounds of the night to be part of the experience.
Rooms and tents
Guests sleep in spacious canvas suites with en-suite bathrooms, set out in a loose line across the grassland. Photos show a bedroom that opens straight onto the plains, a veranda with camp chairs, and a traditional washstand mirror that nods to old-school safari style. Inside, expect proper beds, soft lighting and comfortable furnishings rather than anything rough, with the canvas walls keeping you close to the sounds outside.
Dining
Meals are served in a full dining tent, with the campfire area under the acacia tree used for evening drinks as the light fades. The lounge tent is a pleasant place to linger over a game of backgammon after dinner. As a luxury camp, expect carefully prepared food and a hosted atmosphere, and let your guide know about any dietary needs in advance so they can be arranged.
Things to do from here
- Game drives across the open plains
- Following the migration with an expert guide
- Sundowners by the campfire
- Dawn drives for predators and early light
- Optional balloon flight (ask us to arrange)
When to stay
The Serengeti is usually at its best from July to October, when dry weather and the northern river crossings of the migration draw the most attention, and again in January and February for the southern calving plains. The long rains fall roughly from March to May and bring green, quieter landscapes, while the short rains come around November and December. Because the camp relocates, ask us where it will be during your dates.
Good to know
- The camp moves with the herds, so Lemala confirms its current location before you travel.
- Power and connectivity are usually limited at tented camps, so plan to be properly off the grid.
- Ask us to confirm child policies and minimum ages before booking a family stay.
- Transfers, including any flights to nearby airstrips, are arranged by Lemala as part of your itinerary.
