About Lemala Kuria Hills

Kuria Hills sits in the Wogakuria Hills of the northern Serengeti, a remote region of rolling grassland, open woodland and tree-lined watercourses that draws wildlife in every season. It stands close to the Mara River on the border with Kenya's Maasai Mara, within the main corridor of the wildebeest migration between July and October.

Large granite boulders and kopjes shape the whole lodge. Fifteen glass-fronted tented suites are tucked discreetly among the rocks for privacy, and the public areas look out across the grasslands from the bar, the dining areas and the swimming pool.

Game viewing here comes without the crowds, with guides who know the area and open 4x4 vehicles for the drive. It is a place to enjoy the northern Serengeti in comfort, whether you are chasing river crossings or simply the space and the light.

  • Fifteen glass-fronted suites set among granite kopjes
  • Near the Mara River and the July to October migration corridor
  • A two-bedroom suite with its own plunge pool
  • Swimming pool and sundeck beside the main area
  • A spa in its own tent among the trees
  • Sunset cocktails on a kopje with distant escarpment views

Setting

The Wogakuria Hills are a landscape of grassy slopes, open woodland and granite outcrops, far from the busier tracks of the central Serengeti. The lodge looks over the grasslands from among the rocks, with distant views of the Isuria Escarpment in the Maasai Mara. It is remote, scenic and quiet, with game moving through the area throughout the year.

Rooms and tents

Suites are glass-fronted with open decks, an elegant contemporary design and authentic African touches. Beds are twin or super-king, with triples on request, and bathrooms have a freestanding bathtub, a hot shower, a flush toilet and an outside shower. One two-bedroom suite offers a more modern design and its own private plunge pool for families or friends. Power is solar with a back-up generator.

Dining

There are several places to eat, at the lodge or out in the bush, with a choice of starters, main courses and desserts, plus house drinks. Afternoon tea is served before the game drive, and sunset cocktails are taken on one of the kopjes. The spa tent offers massages and manicures in a peaceful, natural setting.

Things to do from here

  • Game drives in the northern Serengeti with Lemala guides
  • Mara River crossings in the migration season, July to October
  • Sundowners on a kopje above the plains
  • Swimming and sunbathing by the pool
  • Spa treatments in the tented spa

When to stay

The northern Serengeti has game year-round, and the migration passes through the Mara River corridor between roughly July and October. The long rains from March to May bring green hills and few visitors, and the short rains arrive in November and December. Ask us for the likeliest river-crossing window when you plan your dates.

Good to know

  • The nearest airstrip is Kogatende, around a 45-minute drive away. Lemala arranges your transfers.
  • Children are welcome. Ask us about the Lemala Cubs programme and family arrangements.
  • There is one two-bedroom suite with a plunge pool, so ask early if you want it.
  • Complimentary drinks are included, except for premium wines and spirits.
