About Serengeti Katikati Camp

Serengeti Katikati Camp is a classic canvas camp pitched beneath acacia trees on the open grassland of the central Serengeti. The name hints at its position, and the wide view in the photographs shows tents sitting below a grassy hill with plains stretching beyond them.

It is a straightforward and honest option for guests who want to be close to the animals without paying for luxury trimmings, and the position makes long days on the track easier. Twin-bed tents open onto the plains, and en-suite bathrooms add a welcome touch of comfort after a long day on the track.

The atmosphere is that of an old-school safari camp, with a mess tent, a chef at work and the plains right outside. It suits travellers who care more about time on the savannah than about thread counts, and who would rather spend on extra days.

  • Canvas tents pitched beneath acacia trees on open grassland
  • Twin-bed tents that open directly onto the plains
  • En-suite bathrooms with a sink and toilet in every tent
  • A mess tent serving a freshly prepared breakfast spread
  • Central Serengeti position with good access to the game
  • A fair price for a classic camp experience

Setting

The camp sits on the central Serengeti plains, among scattered acacias with a grassy hill rising behind. The ground is open and the horizon wide, and the photographs show tents spread across the grass. Expect distant herds, passing birds and the sounds of the night. Central Serengeti is a busy and productive stretch of the park, and a good base for game drives in most months.

Rooms and tents

Guests sleep in canvas safari tents, with twin beds shown in the photographs and the front opening onto the plains. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom with a sink and toilet. Expect clean, simple, practical comfort rather than frills, with canvas walls that bring the sounds of the bush closer. Ask us to confirm bed layouts, showers and any double-bed options.

Dining

Meals are served in the mess tent, where a chef is seen preparing a breakfast buffet in the photographs. Expect filling, home-style food that fuels long game drives, with a restaurant-style setting at lunch and dinner. Let us know about allergies and dietary needs well in advance so the kitchen can plan around them. Packed meals can usually be arranged for full days out.

Things to do from here

  • Game drives across the central Serengeti plains
  • Full-day drives with a packed lunch
  • Birdwatching around the acacias and grassland
  • Evenings around the campfire after dinner
  • Optional balloon flight, arranged through Lemala

When to stay

July to October is prime Serengeti season, as herds move north towards the Mara River, and January and February bring the calving period to the southern plains. Central Serengeti offers good viewing across much of the year. The long rains from roughly March to May are greener and quieter, with muddy tracks. November and December bring shorter showers. Ask us which time suits your wishes.

Good to know

  • Tented camps usually have limited power and patchy connectivity, so plan to charge devices in the main area.
  • Facilities are comfortable but simple. Ask us to confirm hot water arrangements and laundry options.
  • Lemala arranges transfers, flights and game drives as part of your itinerary.
  • Ask us about child policies and tent arrangements for families.
