Overview

Eight private days across Tarangire, the crater highlands and the Serengeti, planned around the two of you.

A honeymoon should feel like an adventure, not a week on a sun lounger. This itinerary spends seven nights in three very different landscapes, with a private vehicle, a camp chosen for its quiet, and a guide who works to your schedule alone.

You travel from Arusha through Tarangire's baobab country, up to the cool Karatu highlands, down into Ngorongoro Crater, then west to the open Serengeti. Many couples add a few days on Zanzibar or the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro before or after, and the departure flight makes that easy to link.

We offer the trip at two accommodation levels. The wildlife and the days are the same, so you can weigh how much to place on the nights versus the rest of your honeymoon budget.

  • A vehicle and guide that belong only to you for the entire trip
  • Three contrasting landscapes: baobab plains, crater highlands and the Serengeti grasslands
  • A chilled bottle of champagne on arrival in Arusha, set aside for the two of you
  • A private sundowner among the baobabs in Tarangire
  • A candlelit dinner out under the Serengeti stars
  • Full board at every camp, so each day starts and ends without any logistics

What you can expect to see

July to October is the dry season, with herds gathered at water and the migration present in the Serengeti. Tell us your dates and we will shape the Serengeti days around what the herds are doing.

The difference

Why couples pick this route

Nobody else sets your pace. Stay forty minutes with a lion pride, or skip a stop that does not interest you, and nobody has to agree.

Each park has its own rhythm and light, so the days never repeat: elephants and baobabs first, then forest-edged highlands and the crater, then the great plains.

The small gestures are built in: champagne on night one, a sundowner on a rocky outcrop, and a dinner served beneath the open sky.

Along the way

Two ways to stay

  • Second tier

Well-run tented camps and lodges, among them Kahawa House in Arusha, Zuri Kilima Siri in Tarangire and Tloma Lodge in the Karatu highlands. Comfortable and relaxed rather than resort-like, and the choice of most couples.

  • Third tier

Identical days, but with more individual places to sleep: Siringiti's private villa in Arusha, Siringiti's Tarangire and Serengeti camps, and Gibb's Farm in the Karatu highlands, a working coffee farm with one of the finest views in the area.

Day by day

Your itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Arusha

    Arusha

You land at Kilimanjaro International Airport and your guide meets you for the short drive to Arusha. A bottle of champagne is waiting. There is no game drive today, only a quiet first evening together.

Arusha is cooler than the plains ahead, so keep a light layer handy for the evening.

  2. Day 2

    South into Tarangire

    Tarangire National Park

The road south reaches Tarangire around midday, in time for lunch and an afternoon drive. Elephant herds of thirty or more are common along the river. At dusk your guide sets up a private sundowner among the baobabs.

Some Tarangire baobabs are more than a thousand years old and hold enough water in their trunks to see out months of drought. Ask your guide to show you the oldest.

  3. Day 3

    A slow day in Tarangire

    Tarangire National Park

Nowhere to be today. Tarangire repays patience: elephants at the river's edge, giraffe and zebra in the open, and now and then a python coiled in a riverside tree. Your camp lies inside the park, so the night sounds of the bush send you to sleep.

In the dry season wildlife crowds along the Tarangire River. The nearer you travel to October, the bigger the herds tend to be.

  4. Day 4

Lake Manyara and the Karatu highlands

    Lake Manyara, Karatu

Today's route crosses Lake Manyara National Park, with flamingos in the shallows and, with luck, a tree-climbing lion stretched along an acacia limb. The road then climbs into the green, cool highlands around Karatu, where you sleep before tomorrow's crater descent.

Karatu sits above 1,500 m (4,900 ft) and gets chilly after dark, so bring something warm.

  5. Day 5

Ngorongoro Crater, then west to the Serengeti

    Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti

An early start puts you on the crater floor in soft morning light. Across 260 km² (100 sq mi) of grassland, forest and soda lake you may see lion, elephant and black rhino in a single morning. The afternoon takes you west to the Serengeti, reaching camp as the sky turns orange.

The crater floor is a few degrees cooler than the rim, even at noon, so carry a light jacket for the descent.

  6. Day 6

Into the heart of the Serengeti

    Serengeti National Park

The name means endless plains, and today you feel why. Cheetahs scan the grass from termite mounds, lion prides sprawl in the shade, and your guide reads the land like a language. Dinner is served by candlelight outdoors, under a sky thick with stars.

Ask your guide where the migration is right now. The resident wildlife is excellent all year, but the herds add another dimension.

  7. Day 7

    Following the herds

    Serengeti National Park

If your dates match, today centres on the wildebeest migration, vast numbers moving together across the plains. Close herds or distant ones, the evening finishes identically: a sundowner on a rocky outcrop, glasses in hand, watching a sky you will not be able to photograph properly.

Sundowners are usually set on a kopje with a clear horizon. Have your camera ready before the light drops.

  8. Day 8

    Last drive and flight out

    Serengeti, Kilimanjaro Airport

A final early drive, because the light is best before breakfast. Then a short flight carries you out of the Serengeti to Kilimanjaro International and your onward connection, whether that is home or the next stage of the honeymoon.

Questions

Good to know

No. Every drive is private, with your own vehicle and guide. You decide how long to stay at a sighting and when to move on.

Only where you sleep. The parks, the route and the wildlife are the same. The upper level adds features such as private villas, a working coffee farm and camps with a more considered design.

It is a good length: enough to settle into each park without using up your whole leave. If you can spare another three or four days, Zanzibar or a stay near Kilimanjaro rounds it off well, but the safari works alone too.

That depends on the month. The herds circle the Serengeti ecosystem through the year, so their position changes. Send us your dates and we will plan days six and seven to give you the best chance of whatever they are doing.

Yes, it is one of the most common requests. Your departure flight already passes through Kilimanjaro, and a few days of sea air after the Serengeti dust is a happy contrast.

Gratuities for your guide and camp staff, drinks beyond the house selection at most camps, spa treatments, souvenirs and travel insurance are all extra. We strongly suggest you do not skip insurance.

Tanzania is an established safari destination, and you travel privately with an experienced guide. The areas visited are malarial, so speak to a doctor or travel clinic about prophylaxis and routine vaccinations before you leave.

For July to October and the December holidays, six to twelve months ahead gives the best choice of camps, and honeymoon dates go early. Outside those months there is more flexibility.

Yes. It gives you standing room, an open view and room to shoot photographs, which matters over seven days. Every vehicle on this trip is a safari 4x4 with a pop-up roof, used only by the two of you.
